Gay Guide for Asia

Any gay bars in Shenzhen? Why not – of course!

Shenzhen is the first stop of the new gay China trip

By Suzy Size, gay China

gay-shenzhenLeaving her new little girl friend for China was not as easy as firstly suspected. Suzy Size actually shed a tear or two when taking a last look at Champa, the lovely kitten Amorn, the boy friend of so many years, had saved from a garbage bin and since taken excellent care of. Young cats are so funny. But, alas, duty called. As you know, gay fellow sex tourist, the mission of your restless heroine on her infamous Gay Friendship Tour is, to describe the whole world from that specific gay perspective. And Suzy has not been to (Mainland) China for at least 15 years when she travelled from Saigon all the way to Beijing by train. So this huge blind spot – with millions of cute and horny gay men - needed urgent attention of your dedicated sentinel. This time she was starting in Shenzhen then – so the plan - travelling up the coast – again by railway – all the way to Beijing. Then either to Europe (via Mongolia and Russia) or up to Tibet and further. For now Suzy had only prepared for Shenzhen and that was easy.

gay-shenzhenShenzhen, the industrial city just across the border from Hong Kong, is a boom town with about 10 million inhabitants. Suzy Size had booked an inexpensive ticket with Air Asia for herself and her older sister Magna Size who was going along with your heroine on this (hopefully) superb exploration. The boyfriend of Magna picked up Suzy at Castelgandolfo and drove the two ladies to the Bangkok airport. Magna had gotten her China Visa via express service from a local Pattaya agent within two days for 3200 Baht whereas stingy Suzy opted for the four days service at 2200 Baht. The roughly three hours flight was - at 1775 Baht - another bargain. Through www.chinahotelsreservation.com they had made a reservation for the first two nights at Jin Long Du Hotel at 23 US $ per night. The half empty flight took off as scheduled at 18.50 and arrived punctually at 22.50 local time (an hour ahead to Thailand) at the Shenzhen airport. The passengers were asked to stay seated and some Chinese medical personal with mouth masks entered the plane and measured the body temperature of all passengers. Suzy and Magna passed this challenging test graciously and were finally allowed into China. The immigration and baggage procedures went smoothly and in no time the two chatting ladies were in a taxi – the second taxi driver had agreed to turn on the meter. The ride took almost an hour and did cost almost 200 Yuan (1 US $ is worth about 7 Yuan) including the highway fees.

gay-shenzhenThere were some hawkers near the hotel and the two ladies went for some drinks there. There were open air pool tables too and young men bending over them attracted the attention of your two heroines, Magna – if this is possible – was staring even harder at those juicy Chines asses than Suzy. The bill for three big bottles of beer and two cokes was absolutely incredible: 20 Yuan (not even 3 US $).

First thing next morning the two ladies went for an exploratory walk in search of the center of Shenzhen. They were building a Metro line in the neighborhood where a lot of construction and a lot of destruction was going on as well. The two girls finally found a decent Coffee Shop after a while near a McDonalds and thought this might be the center of town. But where was this darn Jing Du Hotel? Suzy had read somewhere that this gay Shenzhen bar “Why Not?” was somewhere behind that Jing Du Hotel and to find at least this place – with that interesting name - was set as the minimal target for your two heroines whilst in Shenzhen. They were smiled at by some mature but still good looking gay Chinese guys, waved back at them, but were not followed by them. So after a maybe three hours walk they opted for a nap first and that gay search later.

gay-shenzhenDiligent Suzy had done her homework back in Castelgandolfo. She had consulted the Pink Pages of Sticky Rice Gay Asia Guide and Gay Guide World and visited the Website of cute masseur Daniel Yao - only to find out he had moved from Shenzhen to Singapore: What a scandal! She had visited the website of Chinastar Massage and was aroused by the prospect of calling over one of those incredible hunks. But then she also read the comments made by users of Sticky Rice and – apparently – that service sends over other guys – much less stunning - than depicted on the site. So Suzy had contacted another one of the many therapist websites called Chinahandsomeboy which had 34 very interesting massage boys for Shenzhen alone. Suzy had asked for prices and they had actually responded: They wanted 800 Yuan (about 115 US $) plus the taxi fare for their massage service, a bit steep, Suzy thought. But – contrary to India – meat would be available in China, if the urge became unbearable, admittedly at high costs, but at least only a call away.

Suzy could have easily found gay Smart Jack Bar in Shenzhen which has its own website with a readable map, but no, “Why Not” was in her stubborn head and had to be found at all possible costs! Magna supported her younger sister enormously in her very, very arduous task, but first they wanted to go to the train station to inquire about trains to Guangzhou (formerly Canton) where they were heading next day and boarded a taxi. It was only then that the two sisters realized, their hotel was located in a suburb of gigantic Shenzhen. It would have taken them a hundred years to walk to the center of town. At the reception of the hotel they had gotten a map and had somebody circle the exact location of Jing Du Hotel which was more or less walking distance from the train station. So after inquiring about the train tickets they walked towards that hotel. But – after getting lost many times and asking several people for directions – the darn hotel they found was the Oriental Regent. After some confusion the ladies found out, Oriental Regent was the English name for Jing Du Hotel!

gay-shenzhenSo “Why Not” was supposed to be behind Jing Du Hotel? What was meant with “behind”? Looking from the entrance of the hotel? Or looking from the other side? Or meant behind in this strange case not rather besides? If one was looking from besides, behind was besides, but on the other side. So your heroines Magna and Suzy Size walked all around the big Oriental Regent of Shenzhen. The two grey girls looked into many dark and lit alleys. Inquired in many night clubs whether they were housing “Why Not” on their third floor, but nobody in the area had ever heard of bloody, bloody “Why Not”.

Suzy was really out of her wits, but Magna proved to be a very insisting assistant indeed. It was Magna who inquired all those watchmen, all those bystanders. Had there been any policeman around, Magna would most certainly have asked him too.

Then Suzy saw two gay men walking by, a smile was exchanged and then Suzy run after them and asked them about the location of “Why Not”. The direction they pointed out was the street just behind the entrance of the Regent Oriental. That is were your two sentinels had been looking already, but – of course – they went back and tried again and again. Nobody knew the place, there was no trace of any sign in English. So again Magna inquired in a fancy hair salon nearby, but all those very cute hairdressers did not seem to understand the question: They handed a piece of paper back to Magna with the question: “What color do you want?”

But finally one of them seemed to understand and to know “Why Not”. He pointed to the same spot as the two gay guys had before.

So in a last heroic attempt they tried again, but still could not find that damned “Why Not”. Suzy was on the brink of giving up, but Magna finally entered a shop and asked the receptionist if she knew “Why Not”. She did not and the tired ladies now really gave up and walked away. But they were followed by a young man who just had walked into the last shop. He took Magnas arm and did lead her back. Entered that last shop Magna just had inquired and took the elevator up to second floor. And there it was at last: “Why Not”.

It is the building between Raindrops Café and the Shenzhen Development Bank, a big 17 is the house number. The entrance of “Why Not” is on second floor, not - as they print on their name card - on third. It is a friendly club on two stories, on top of the bar or disco is the Karaoke. Suzy had a glass of beer at 30 Yuan. It was a bit boring since Magna and Suzy were the only guests. So the two very tired ladies left soon.

Would Suzy Size go back to “Why Not”? Sure, but only after 11 pm when the action starts. The place is very popular with guys from Hong Kong during the weekends. And there seem to be some money boys there too then.

Their gay China discovery takes Suzy and Magna to Guangzhou next. Read more about this fascinating city (formerly Canton) next week exclusively on Sticky Rice Gay Guide Asia and Gay Guide World.
