Happy Hours at the Youth Hostel in Shanghai

Magna and Suzy Size boarded another one of those futuristic bullet trains in Hangzhou that brought them in one hour and 18 minutes to Shanghai. The highest speed was 244 kilo meters per hour. This form of transportation is so civilized! The way you buy your ticket with numbered seats for 54 Yuan (roughly eight US $). The friendly allocated waiting room. Then well ahead of departure you let your luggage pass through that screening machine and board the train. Not once during the whole trip did a train leave late. As soon as the train is under way polite attendants will offer you coffee, other drinks and snacks. The landscape flies by the windows and in no time you have reached another Tsuozaezahn where you board one of those inexpensive taxis. Suzy – still young at heart – had chosen Shanghai Y 35, the Youth Hostel near Peoples Square and had overcome the language barrier – lacking a printer - by taking a picture from their website showing a map. The taxi driver took a close look and off they were.

At the reception of said Youth Hostel your two traveling heroines were asked if they had a reservation? Since they did not, the friendly and able girl checked her books very carefully and finally decided she could accommodate the two grey ladies. As tempting as it might have been they did not opt for the dormitory but for single rooms with their own bathrooms and Wifi for the usual 180 Yuan (26 US $). It would have been easy to bring new friends to the room, just pretending to take them for a drink at the bar on third floor when passing the reception downstairs. The Youth Hostels in China are not - as you probably would expect – for young people only - with rigid rules to keep the rough ones at bay. They all have quite inviting bars with pool tables and other interesting games and the one in Shanghai even had a “Happy Hour” that lasted from 8 pm to 10 pm. Magna – who drinks much less than Suzy – could have her daily Jameson with Coke as night cap right there, if they made it home before 11 pm when the bar closes. So this did not happen that often since Shanghai by far has the most open and vivid gay scene of all of China and the two discoverers worked a many night shift. At the time of the visit the first Shanghai Pride was held, but neither Suzy nor Magna were very interested in the events offered, they were clearly after sex…

It is always a bit difficult to find your way in a new Chinese city and Suzy therefore contacted Pan Tao, a 26 year old Shanghai gay guide with appealing looks (see Pink Pages of Sticky Rice Gay Guide Asia), but he had no time for your two heroines due to other customers who had hired him for a job. Suzy had printed the Shanghai Gay Map provided by Pan Tao back in Castelgandolfo – her residence just outside Pattaya - which helped to find Magna and her their way around. Once they had found Eddys (just besides Alldays) which is the oldest gay bar of Shanghai, the rest was not really easy, but manageable. They were a bit early at Eddys and only a few guests had arrived. They got into a conversation with another visitor, Frederick, a Chinese guy who lives in Australia together with his farang boy friend of many years. He was interested in Suzy and later that night invited her to join him at his fancy hotel, but since he was a top as well and due to acute tiredness she missed that tempting opportunity.

Shanghai Studio is more or less opposite Eddys and clearly more vivid than the first one. It is located underground in an old, very spacious bunker that houses several bars and dance floors plus an art gallery. It is a happy and young crowd that gathers here after 9 pm till late, but neither Magna nor Suzy managed to make a catch. They tried their luck next day at Studio 2006, a fancy gay sauna, that is also placed in a spacious underground bunker nearby Shanghai Studio. The entrance is expensive (80 Yuan about 11.50 US $) and most visitors were young and sporty beautiful people that were clearly not interested in meeting old farang tarts. In a way it was nice to visit that well designed and proper place, but since all those hunks knew how good looking they were, they all were a bit conceited and it was a chaste visit. Suzy and Magna also went to G Massage, where they have good looking masseurs indeed, but they are really pricy, especially if you come from the gay heavens of good old Pattaya, so neither of your two stingy heroines got laid that night.

During the days they wandered around Shanghai, visited the Bund and other places of interest. But after sunset, they developed their specific gay interests as usual. The easiest gay place to find in Shanghai was Ding Lin Men Club, a sauna with some (affordable) massage boys. You just take Subway number 1 to Yang Chan Road, leave through exit 3 and walk for 800 meters on Yang Chan Road till you reach number 775. It is a spacious sauna and not smelly as described by gay guide Pan Tao. In order to enter you have to become a member for 20 Yuan and the entrance fee then is 35 Yuan. Suzy had a short look in the steam room where somebody gave a blow job to somebody but was not interested into those senior citizens or dirty old men. She grabbed the best looking masseur she could find and went with him into the massage room after signing the bill for 180 Yuan. It was the strangest sex massage of her life. The masseur did not get undressed, would not do anything except letting your heroine touch his fast swelling dick under his pants, not wearing any underwear. He constantly looked at the glass window in the door, pointing out that he would get fired if caught in the act (quite incredible in a gay sauna). Suzy managed to come, but do not ask how, she must have been really desperate.

Since it would have been an inconvenient train ride to Qingdao – both Suzy and Magna hate to get up early or arrive early morning or late at night – they booked a flight there which was – at 490 Yuan or 70 US $ - even cheaper than the train. Suzy stole that picture of those two French backpackers at yet another brand new and excellent Chinese airport.
