But since Suzy wanted to use an international and not a local Polish train this was the wrong counter and that extremely helpful woman cued again at another counter which enabled Suzy finally to buy a ticket and leave inhospitable Warsaw early next morning and hopefully for ever, at least in this life.

Dresden was heavily bombed in February of 1945 which more or less destroyed the “Florence on the Elbe” and probably must be considered a war crime since it made little or no sense militarily. But Dresden was not destroyed for good. Contrary to Warsaw, the historic center with Zwinger, Semper Opera and, last but not least, the Liebfrauenkirche were painstakingly rebuilt. The enormous effort has paid back. Dresden is a truly beautiful city again and Suzy Size enjoyed every minute she spent here. Little reminds of the communist era too, Dresden today is a modern city with friendly hospitable people, definitely part of Europe. And this is true for all the Baltic states and Poland as well. In only twenty years they have become an integral part of a peaceful Europe, quite an (irreversible) achievement.

With the liberation from communist rule, a market economy was introduced in what formerly was East Germany.
