The famous boat races of Nong Khai
A mighty pretext for fun, fun, fun
By Suzy Size, gay Nong Khai
With the end of Buddhist Lent by the beginning of October the annual boat races take place all over Thailand. Suzy Size has seen many of them over the years in Nong Khai, where she has a second majestic residence called Castelgandolfo II, built on land bought from the family of her beloved, but incredibly lazy boyfriend of so many years, Khun Amorn. The real sister of your heroine – Esther – had visited Suzy in Pattaya together with her 14 year old son Nicolas who is about 1.80 m tall and very good looking with his blue eyes and blond hair. Then mother and son had flown to Siem Reap to see the monumental temples of Angkor which are partly flooded right now. Following the advice of Suzy they had stayed at nice and inexpensive Ei8th Rooms guest house - for the details as always go to the Pink Pages of Sticky Rice Gay Guide Asia and Gay Guide World – and liked it very much. Then they had taken a taxi to the boarder town Poipet (on the Cambodian side) and crossed over to Aranyaprathet (Thai side). This ride within Cambodia now takes only about two hours in a car, instead of the twelve on a then so necessary four wheel vehicle about ten years ago. Suzy and Amorn were driving from Pattaya to Aranyaprathet to pick them up and continue up to Nong Khai together.
Khun Amorn who at first not had wanted to come along, due to some extremely important parties in Pattaya, was now cheerful since there were also extremely important parties scheduled up in Nong Khai where the annual boat races were going to take place. He drove far too fast as always, Suzy suffered many near death experiences during the journey, has naturally screamed hysterically a lot, but somehow survived. Only once they were stopped by a policeman who rightly accused Khun Amorn of speeding, without having a machine to prove this offence. But who needs such a machine in a country where everybody driving is speeding anyhow? Is it not the friendlier solution – benevolent to both parties involved - to agree on a small penalty of 100 Baht? Chivit paeng, life is expensive, right? The bill is handed over more or less discretely and – it goes without saying – no red tape is involved like a painstakingly written receipt. And to make up for the little delay, Khun Amorn will naturally do more speeding.
If you have never been to Nong Khai, gay sex tourist to Asia, do not expect too many wonders. You may visit that Buddhist Monster Park, of course, the Tasadej, the Indochina Market, and the beautiful shores of the mighty Mekhong, but do not expect a structured gay scene. You will meet many beautiful sons of Nong Khai in Pattaya or Bangkok, but close to home, most of them become shy again, would not like to be remembered publicly how they earn their money in Jomtien beach or in some of the gay Bangkok massage places. They can become gay if you pay, but this wonder works best far from home.
Khun Amorn is not such a guy after living with your heroine for 17 years, he is openly gay, shamelessly showing when he likes to make a catch. Like to that cute waiter with the pony tale who was showered with funny compliments, working in one of the hot pot restaurants that open at night along the shores of the Mekhong. It is owned by a friend of Khun Amorn and both were teasing that young man with the pony tale, but both knew that he has “a wife already”. They had him he in the past, maybe, but now it was a harmless game only, since he had “a wife already”. Later that night Khun Amorn and his friend (who likes to dress as a woman) went for a drinking and hunting spree to the Lao Thai Hotel with its in-disco. Khun Amorn came home in the early morning and had to sleep all day in order to recover just a bit, regain some strength.
But do not worry too much about Khun Amorn, he was certainly fit again next day to do some hearty gambling with some friends on the beautiful terrace overlooking the fishpond. He had talked your heroine into going to town in order to buy a noodle soup at this very special noodle soup shop. It goes without bloating: You will get the World Best noodle soup in said shop in Nong Khai, true, really true! Normally Khun Amorn will cook something for his friendly old parents at noon, but he had some other priorities that day. By seducing Suzy Size to go for the noodle soup, he killed several birds with one stone. Your heroine was out of the way when the gambling started (she hates it and has loudly complaint about it in the past) and could get the food for the parents without paying for it. Upon her return to the house she was so happy about her great noodle soup, she would not moan too much about that despicable gambling going on, she could also be approached or a little soft loan of 40 Baht – for good luck, this mainly was. And it helped Khun Amorn, indeed. He won about 150 Baht that incredibly lucky day.
When Esther and Nicolas were ready for the airport in Udon Thani to first fly to Bangkok and next day to Bali, Suzy Size and Khun Amorn gave them a ride. Suzy had seen a sign for an obviously newly opened Carrefour store when driving up to Nong Khai by Udon Thani and lusted after some of their excellent pork sausages she frequently buys in their Pattaya outlet. After the tearful good by at the airport with the sister, Khun Amorn was ordered to search for Carrefour. Since he is incredibly lazy, he tried to sell Suzy Lotus nearby. But your heroine insisted in Carrefour, not last for their delicious bread as well. Suzy told Khun Amorn to ask somebody for the way to Carrefour, but, as usual, the stubborn (not so young anymore) man would not do that. Firstly, he could loose face by not knowing where Carrefour in Udon Thani might be. Secondly, the person asked might not know the answer and could thus loose face. So Khun Amorn drove about forty five minutes through the heavy Friday evening traffic of Udon Thani without any clue, no sight of Carrefour in sight. He then finally bought a flower garland from one of the sellers and asked directions. When they finally reached Carrefour after well over an hour, it was a two minutes drive away from the airport. To add insult to injury, Carrefour in Udon Thani had neither those delicious sausages nor that crunchy bread.
The highlight of the recent visit to Nong Khai were without doubt the famous boat races. The extended family and many friends first gathered at the house of a niece of Khun Amorn, just a stone throw from the Mekong. Beer and Whisky was drunk at that occasion and many a snacks were tasted. Whereas Suzy stuck to potato chips and peanuts the locals were trying fried silk worms and other ethnic specialties. Everybody was chatting, Khun Amorn and his two gay friends had a good time joking with others. Then it was high time to proceed to the banks of the Mekhong just walking distance away.
It was awfully hot and Suzy – as the honorary main sponsor of Khun Amorns family and group – soon sat down at a table in the shadow and ordered food and drinks of all sorts. Once in while a boat race would take place and people actually got up and cheered a bit, but the boat races are not the main point, they are pretext to have a good time. Drinking, eating, talking and joking is equally fun as seeing and being seen. And betting, of course, is great fun too. The gamblers really remember the winners, the rest forgets them quite quickly. The same drunk as last year tried to speak in a strange English with your heroine and asked the same banal questions as last year. If Suzy is there next year, there is a high chance he will be there again and ask the same questions anew.
One major change, however, was noticeable, there were many more young Gothois (lady boys) out there this year. For instance a now fifteen year old nephew of Khun Amorn who acts effeminate since he was five years of age. Another young nephew is not sure yet if he may join the Gothoi Association of Nong Khai, but to the seasoned eyes of Suzy Size it looks like that.
One cute very young Gothoi who had caught an old and really ugly farang already flirted restlessly with your heroine behind the back of said man. Suzy was flattered, but was more interested in the manly rowers which were themselves busy with the famous boat races and not into hanky panky right now.
Suzy surely will see some of them back in Jomtien beach.
